Coding Theory and Code-based Cryptography Semester SoSe 2023
Lecturer Juliane Krämer (Fakultät für Informatik und Data Science)
Type of course (Veranstaltungsart) Seminar
German title Coding Theorie und Code-basierte Kryptographie
Contents In this seminar, we study the mathematical theory of codes and their application to cryptography.
Code-based cryptography is one of the promising candidates for cryptography in the era
of quantum computers. Still, they date back to the first days of modern cryptography, to
McEliece and Niederreiter’s encryption protocols. As in the early stage, the protocols were
less efficient compared with analogues constructed from number-theoretic assumptions, the
code-based protocols have not been in the focus, neither in the research community, nor in
applications. The dawn of quantum computers and the algorithms that can break current
protocols was a renaissance for code-based cryptography: Since then, the research community
works on analyzing the security of existing code-based schemes as well as creating new, more
efficient alternatives from codes.
Besides their motivation in the application to cryptography, codes are mathematical objects,
which makes them interesting to study in their own right. For example, codes can be
constructed using methods from algebraic geometry over finite fields, while the analysis of
codes can involve linear algebra, algebraic geometry, and ring theory, as well as probabilistic
methods for decoding.
In this seminar, we cover both these aspects, the mathematical theory as well as applications
to cryptography.
