Characteristic classes are a way to associate to a vector bundle over a space, such as the tangent bundle of a smooth manifold, various invariants in the cohomology of the space. This is a topic in algebraic topology, but as we will see even scratching the surface of this theory yields many consequences in algebra, geometry and topology. However a motivated student could manage without.
