Contents
In this course we will study linear actions of groups on vector spaces, a classic and beautiful subject in mathematics. It is also extremely relevant to many different areas, having found applications in geometry, physics, number theory, combinatorics, algebra and so on. First we will focus on the case of characteristic zero, and cover all of the key basic results, such as Maschke's theorem and the theory of characters. An emphasis will be placed on examples and applications of the results proven in other areas of mathematics. Then we will spend the remaining time discussion modular representation theory, representations of p-groups in characteristic p. Here the story is much more subtle, as we will see.
