Inhalt We will cover topics in 3-manifold topology: We start with basic theory, including the prime decomposition theorem, a proof of Dehn's lemma and the loop theorem, the notion of hierarchies, a funamental technique in 3-manifold topology introduced by Haken and exploited also by Waldhausen, Johannson, and, in an adopted way, by Gabai and Thurston, among others. As a large class of 3-manifolds that are well understood we will discuss Seifert fibred manifolds. We then turn to more recent topics in 3-manifold topology such as sutured manifolds, geometrisation, and the virtual Haken and virtual fibering conjecture.
This seminar is intended for students wishing to write a bachelor or master thesis in the area of 3-manifold topology, and also for researchers working in this area.
Empfohlene Vorkenntnisse Solid knowledge in algebraic topology is necessary, and in particular homology groups, the fundamental group, and covering spaces
