This is a beautiful piece of algebraic geometry that can be seen as an introduction to many topics such as intersection theory, Mori program and minimal model program, approximation theorems for birational morphisms of algebraic varieties, ampleness criteria of line bundles. There will be many examples to get your hands dirty. Literature As the main source we will use I.R. Shafarevich, V.A. Iskovskikh, "Algebraic Surfaces", in Algebraic Geometry II. Springer, 1996 Recommended previous knowledge Ideally, Chapters II and III of the Hartshorne's book. However, the most important prerequisites are the following:
