Algebraic surfaces
Semester
SoSe 2021

Lecturer
Pavel Sechin

Type of course (Veranstaltungsart)
Seminar

Contents
We will cover the methods and the results of the birational classification of algebraic surfaces (over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0). This is a beautiful piece of algebraic geometry that can be seen as an introduction to many topics such as intersection theory, Mori program and minimal model program, approximation theorems for birational morphisms of algebraic varieties, ampleness criteria of line bundles. There will be many examples to get your hands dirty.

Literature
As the main source we will use

I.R. Shafarevich, V.A. Iskovskikh, "Algebraic Surfaces", in Algebraic Geometry II. Springer, 1996

Recommended previous knowledge
Ideally, Chapters II and III of the Hartshorne's book. However, the most important prerequisites are the following:
  • vector bundles, ample and very ample line bundles, the tangent bundle,
  • divisors,
  • linear systems and morphisms to projective spaces,
  • acquaintance with algebraic curves,
  • blow-ups,
  • cohomology of coherent sheaves together with the Serre duality.

(The latter will be briefly reminded in one of the first seminars.)

If you have doubts whether your background is sufficient for the seminar, please contact me by e-mail.
