This seminar will be held both in German and in English.

Deutsche Beschreibung: Von Mathematiker:innen wird unabhängig von ihrem Beruf (Forschende, Lehrkräfte, Geschäftsleute, ...) eine gute Kommunikationsfähigkeit erwartet. Neben einer guten allgemeinen Kommunikation (sowohl in mündlicher als auch in schriftlicher Form) gehört dazu auch, die Art, die Struktur und den Zweck eines Vortrags/Textes an eine gegebene Situation anpassen zu können. (Z.B. müssen Gymnasiasten anders behandelt werden als Forschende auf einer Konferenz oder potenzielle Geschäftspartner:innen.)

Trotz ihrer Bedeutung erhalten Kommunikationsfähigkeiten in der mathematischen Ausbildung meist nicht die Aufmerksamkeit, die sie eigentlich verdienen. Aus diesem Grund soll in diesem Seminar ein besonderer Schwerpunkt auf sie gelegt werden:

Wie in einem traditionellen Seminar verfassen alle Teilnehmenden eine Ausarbeitung und halten einen Vortrag zu einem ausgewählten Thema. Diese werden die unterschiedlichsten Bereiche der Mathematik abdecken und für jeden Geschmack etwas bereithalten, sodass sich die Teilnehmenden auf ein abwechslungsreiches mathematisches Menü freuen dürfen. Unser Hauptaugenmerk wird jedoch auf der Förderung der Schreib- und Präsentationsfähigkeiten der Studierenden liegen (insbesondere, und dies ist möglicherweise die einzige Voraussetzung für dieses Seminar, sollten Teilnehmer:innen die Bedeutung dieser Fähigkeiten anerkennen).

Zu diesem Zweck werden Videos (sowie Folien für diejenigen, die lieber lesen als zuhören) über das Verfassen mathematischer Texte sowie das Halten von Vorträgen bereitgestellt, die die Teilnehmenden ansehen (oder lesen) sollten, bevor sie mit der Arbeit an ihren Projekten beginnen. Darüber hinaus werden wir in der Vorbesprechung die Vorschläge der Studierenden zur Präsentation des Materials analysieren und dabei helfen, das Beste herauszuholen – sowohl für die Vortragenden/Autor:innen als auch für das Publikum.

Dieses Seminar wird als Blockseminar veranstaltet, d.h., es findet nicht wöchentlich während des Semesters statt, sondern geblockt in den letzten beiden Wochen der Semesterferien (oder äquivalent, in den ersten beiden April-Wochen). Die Seminar-Vorbesprechung (auf Deutsch) fand am Dienstag, dem 30.01., um 18:30-19:15 Uhr online via Zoom statt. English description: Mathematicians are expected to have good communication skills, regardless of their profession (researcher, teacher, businessperson, ...). Apart from good general communication (both in oral and written form), this also includes the ability of adjusting the nature, structure and purpose of a talk/text to a given situation. (E.g., high school students need to be treated differently than researchers at a conference or prospective business partners.)

Despite their importance, communication skills usually do not receive the attention they deserve in mathematics education. For this reason, the purpose of this seminar will be to put special emphasis on them:

As in a traditional seminar, every student will write a report and give a talk on a chosen topic. These will cover a wide variety of areas of mathematics, suiting all tastes, so that participants may look forward to a diverse mathematical menu. However, our main focus will be on improving the students' writing and presentation skills (in particular, and this may be the only prerequisite for this seminar, prospective students should acknowledge the importance of these skills).

To this aim, there will be videos (as well as slides, for those who prefer reading over listening) providing advice on writing mathematical texts and giving mathematical talks, which the participants are supposed to watch (or read) before starting to work on their projects. Moreover, in the preliminary meeting, we will analyse the students' suggestions on how to present the material, and help to get the best out of it - both for the speaker/author and the audience.

This seminar is intended to be a "Blockseminar", i.e., it does not take place on a weekly basis during the term, but instead all talks will be given during the last two weeks of the semester break (or equivalently, during the first two weeks of April).
