Contents Elliptic curves are widely considered in arithmetic geometry, since they are among the simplest varieties and permit an interesting group structure. Most famously, they were used by Wiles to prove Fermat’s last theorem.
In this seminar, we will develop the basic theory of elliptic curves. After summarizing some results from algebraic geometry, the second part of the seminar will focus on the arithmetic of elliptic curves. We will study their homomorphisms, torsion points, and prove the Weil conjectures for elliptic curves. If time permits, we will also describe elliptic curves over the complex numbers, which are essentially complex tori.
Recommended previous knowledge Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry I are helpful, but not necessary
